Disha Mittal is a 2010 batch IPS
officer of Tamil Nadu Cadre. She is widely regarded as the ‘Lady Singham’ of
Tamil Nadu. She is an honest police officer who is known for maintaining law
and order without going for tough measures, like encounters. She is a tough
police officer with humane touch.
Disha Mittal has got wide
appreciation for her role in handling the sexual abuse case involving a
headmaster of a Government school. In the remote village of Madurai district,
the headmaster had sexually abuses more than 20 teenage girls. When mother of
one of the victims approached the High Court, the order was issued for special
investigation of the case. The High Court had asked to appoint a gender
sensitive police officer not below the rank of DSP. Disha Mittal was chosen for
this job. In fact, that was the first case given to her. And, she managed to unearth
this tough case where she was required to talk with children on the issue of
sexual abuse. She gathered enough evidence which resulted in a water tight
case. The headmaster was recently convicted and punished for 55 years in prison.
