Urmila Matondkar Converts to Islam

Urmila Matondkar, the Rangeela Girl of 1990s is no more a Hindu. She has changed her religion post marriagek with a Kashmiri Muslim. She is now Mariam Akhtar Mir. Interestingly, as per Article 370, she has gotten 'citizenship' of Jammu and Kashmir. If a woman from Kashmir marries a person outside the state, she will lose her rights as a Kashmiri. She can't own properties in Jammu and Kashmir. The rule is different for a Kashmiri man marrying a woman outside the state.

Urmila had tied the knot with her Kashmiri boyfriend Mohsin Akhtar Mir. Few months after marriage, the pressure started to be put on Urmila to change her religion. She protested, but had to relent as she didn’t want her marriage to collapse.

For official purpose, Urmila has not changed her name. She will use this name to fight Lok Sabha Election from Mumbai North.

She will still be known as Urmila Matondkar.

However, for personal issues, she is Mariam Akhtar Mir. This name finds mention in the nakahnama (when Urmila had not converted).

It may not be apt to call it a case of Love Jihad. It stretches credulity to even think that a modern lady like Urmila can also become a victim of Love Jihad.
